Convert V4 is an automated media converter - designed for large-scale batch conversions - engineered for easy handling

Source Clip Info Panel

Selecting any clip in the media pool will also show the attributes for that clip. Resolution, framerate, duration as well as number of frames in the clip, color matrix and luma range information

For extended info use the right-click menu to select "Clip info..." or "Exif data..." for the selected media clip

Option Controls

Option control functions are simple labels and dropdown selections. Labels are highlighted when options are available. Clicking a red label will provide a drop-down menu for option and codec selections.

Double-click the function name (to the left of each function) to reset that function to the default setting

Speed / PTS

For changing framerate without changing playback speed, use the Target FPS buttons to select the appropriate framerate in fps, and select Dropframe With Audio

For slow-motion renders (using source framerates above 50fps), select either a speed factor (1/4, 1/2, 2x, 10x, etc) or specific target fps and de-select both Dropframe With Audio and Resample With Audio. The output video will have smooth slow playback - without audio

For converting standards, use Resample With Audio and either 23.976, 25 or 29.97fps targets Useful for 24-25fps 25-24fps 24-30fps

Scale Output

To change the resolution of your clips click the Re-Scale label for a drop-down list of presets, or select "Custom" and enter your own scaling parameters in the provided width and height fields. Convert V4 will scale your conversions to the size you enter. Scaling operations are processed by high quality scaling algorithms for smooth and accurate renders

 

Conversion Codecs

Use the drop-down menu to select your conversion codec. If options are available for the codec selected, the option labels for that codec will become active. Once you have selected a codec and the appropriate options, enter a <project name> to serve as a unique identifier for your conversions. The project name will also become the reel name in metadata as well as the name of the subdirectory the converted clips will be placed in

Available options are:

Vimeo 720P, 1080P & 4K

YouTube 720p, 1080p & 4K

Avid DNxHR HQ, SQ & LB, OP 1a MXF and OP Atom (DNxHD & XDCAM)

 

Timecode

Convert V4 is setup by default to detect either actual timecode embedded in a media clip, or derived timecode generated by file modification time. You can also select "Passthrough" from the timecode drop-down menu to bypass the derived timecode function and pass timecode (or lack of timecode) along to the converted clips

Additionally, you can elect to re-stripe timecode across all clips in the Media Pool. Select "User Assigned" from the Timecode drop-down. The Start Timecode Panel will appear to enable setting the start timecode for the clips in the Media Pool

You may also elect to "Zero all" to set timecode to "00:00:00:00" for all clips in the media pool

TC Panel

 

Interlace / de-interlace

Add interlace to your clips easily with the INTERLACE function. Choose your field preference from the DE-INTERLACE drop-down list. 24fps to 30fps basic telecine is also available with select codecs as is de-interlacing as well


Audio Functions

Convert V4 will select the optimal audio format for the selected conversion codec. You may elect to convert source audio to either PCM wav, AAC, ALAC, copy from source or no audio. Use the Audio Codec drop-down to select

When importing audio-only clips, select "Audio Only" from the Video Codec drop-down menu. Select an audio conversion codec from the Audio Codec drop-down and begin


BlackMagic Hyperdeck
clips will show 16 channels of audio. Convert will strip out the unused channels and render your conversion with a properly mapped audio track. The PCM AUDIO button is ignored when 16 channel audio is detected

Known Limitations

DNxHD, MPEG MXF & OP Atom conversions will render max. resolution 1920x1080

Video source resolution of 1584 x 674 (as provided by Magic Lantern RAW clips recorded in non-crop mode at 2.35:1 aspect ratio) will not convert to ProRes format - conversions will fail

License keys can be purchased here. Convert V4 will run in trial mode with limitations


Getting Started

Use the right-click context-sensitive menu to select the following input options
or to bring up additional tools:


Import Media...

...allows individual selection of clips for conversion. Single or multiple clips can be selected from the open file dialog using the control or shift keys

V4 now provides a single interface for either video or audio media clips


Conversions Directory

Before you can begin your conversions you need to setup a CONVERSIONS DIRECTORY. Click on the "< click to set conversions directory >" text field to select a root directory for your conversions. Conversions will be created in subdirectories of the selected root directory using the info provided as the <project name>. The <project name> field will also be used as the clip reel name in metadata


Network Aware

Convert V4 can work with either local drive mappings or UNC network names such as \\MACHINE NAME\SHARE in the Media Pool as well as with archive backup directories and the CONVERSIONS ROOT DIRECTORY

Quick Preview

Once you have your clips in the media pool just select and double-click a clip to open the media
in the associated media player for the file type selected


Non-destructive

Convert does all image processing on-the-fly utilizing the industry standard ffmpeg.
No changes are made to original source material at any time


Program Controlled Functions

For specialized functions and settings, Convert V4 will make appropriate options selections automatically. It will also disable option buttons that are known not to function with particular codecs and other options selected. In most cases Convert V4 will prevent options that will cause failures - but due to the flexibility of the application it cannot anticipate all possible problems

Luma Range

Convert V4 now auto-detects the Luma Range (0-255 or 16-235) in each imported clip and renders the appropriate values

Status

Convert V4 provides job status messages at the bottom of the interface. When available, displays conversion processing status (current frame number & conversion speed in fps) and shows elapsed time from the start of your conversion along with clip count and progress

While conversions are in progress, the << RENDERING >> message will appear

On-board Video Scopes

Convert V4 sports a set of video scopes for on-location spot checks. Included are waveform monitor, histograms, vectorscope and RGB parade. Select a clip in theCutting Tool and right-click select "Send to Scopes..." - or use
Alt-S to bring up the scopes panel

The scopes do not run in real time - instead they are passive until the Cutting Tool playback is paused,
the trackbar is scrolled, or when clips are selected. Once the current frame is loaded, the scopes will refresh

An additional note - the scopes were designed to ignore luma range or color matrix tags - what is presented
are the actual signal levels (Most major NLE and grading applications will read the tags and adjust the scope traces accordingly. V4 intentionally does not to provide an unbiased baseline. This makes reading converted clips that have no range value tags accurate)

Cutting Tool

The Convert V4 Cutting Tool is designed for making pre-editing cuts for export to industry-standard EDL or to the Convert format S-EDL for import back into V4. This way you can select portions of your source clips for conversion - saving both render time and disc space. You open a clip in the player, seek and select in and out points, then send to the Shot List

Cutter



Media Browser

Convert V4 also provides a Media Browser for loading clips for preview or drag-and-drop into V4 or other applications

The Media Browser can load individual clips, by directory or recursively

Right-click and select Media Browser... from the context-sensitive menu


MediaBrowser

The Media Browser was re-designed to work directly with the V4 Media Pool and the Cutting Tool

Click a thumbnail to select a single clip, or Shift-click to select multiples. Right-click select
"Send to Media Pool" or "Send to Cutting Tool" to load your clips into the selected tool

Use the mouse wheel to scroll the thumbnail panel up and down

An added benefit of the Media Browser is the ability to select and work with clips while thumbnails are loading
This way you can load in hundreds of clips and start working with them even before the Media Panel finishes populating

Performance Monitor

Convert V4 provides CPU load info and other status messages in a new Performance Monitor

Right-click and select Performance Monitor... from the context-sensitive menu
